ExxonMobil is invested in advanced recycling.
Why? Because it’s a good investment for its customers, shareholders, and the communities where it operates. By embedding these units within its pre-existing facilities, it can scale up faster and at a much lower cost than most of industry, and this can help increase recycling rates in nearby cities and towns.
We’ve expanded our Baytown operations with a second advanced recycling unit. Combined with our first unit, which has been in operation since late 2022, we have processed more than 45,000 tonnes of plastic as of May 2025.
ExxonMobil is ready for this expanded capacity – it learned from the first unit what works well and what to do better. These lessons have been applied to the second unit and improvements will continue with each new unit.
These units are sound investments – and they're part of how ExxonMobil is helping to address plastic waste.
Advanced recycling transforms used plastic into raw materials for valuable products. Through its existing facilities, ExxonMobil can convert nearly 90 % of used plastic into useful raw materials. This helps keep plastic out of landfills and incinerators and can help customers meet their goals around plastic waste.
To increase recycling rates, one of the big challenges around the world is collecting and sorting plastic waste. That’s why ExxonMobil is working with communities, customers, and other companies to collect plastic waste for our recycling units.
ExxonMobil helped form the joint venture Cyclyx International to help collect and sort a wide variety of plastic waste, and helped found the Houston Recycling Collaboration to expand the collection of residential plastic waste. Other local communities have indicated interest in similar programs, and ExxonMobil is eager to expand this collaborative effort.
ExxonMobil also announced additional investments, including a third and fourth Baytown unit and our first unit in Beaumont, Texas. This will increase our overall capacity to approximately 225,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year.
Additional advanced recycling investments are under consideration for North America, Europe, and Asia. AT
