Huhtamaki ‘s Fresh packaging concept wins Innovation Award - Bio-based Material of the Year 2020

Each year since 2008, at the close of the first day of nova Institute’s annual Bio-Based Materials conference, in a tradition that even the coronavirus pandemic could not disrupt, the winners of the Innovation Award– Bio-based Material of the Year are chosen.

The finalists, previously selected by an expert jury, are given the opportunity to pitch their innovations to the audience, after which the final winners are selected.

This year, circumstances dictated that the conference take place online. The pitches and voting were likewise held online – which in no way affected the enthusiasm of the participants.

Each finalist introduced their product to the participants in a ten-minute presentation, after which the voting commenced.

Huhtamaki, was the clear winner, with 33% of the votes. Its Fresh packaging concept – a biobased, compostable tray that is food-safe, oven proof and microwavable offers a convenient and attractive solution that is both sustainable and functional.

Monta Klebebandwerk’s biobased packaging tape was voted into second place, while Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC, with its bioORMOCER barrier coating placed third.

The other finalists were LAM'ON, with an innovative biodegradable laminating film, Mondi Engineered Materials with a new biodegradable nonwoven for wipes, and Tensac, from Argentina, who presented a new bio-based insecticide.
