Chocomel now comes in sustainable packaging made with 80 percent plant-based materials

FrieslandCampina’s shelf-stable Chocomel brand of chocolate milk is now being sold in a new, innovative cardboard liter pack, made from raw materials with a biocontent of over 80%. The plant-based materials are derived from wood that is 100 percent sourced from FSC-certified forests, and sugar cane.

nThe new packaging is now available in stores in the Netherlands.
While the cardboard is produced from wood, the plastic of the cap and the outer plastic layer of the iconic yellow-colored suit are now made from inedible biomass, which is not in competition with the food chain. On an annual basis, about 40 million packages are involved.
By crossing the 80 percent limit FrieslandCampina has reached the threshold for the ‘Ok Biobased’ 4-star certificate, which is the highest achievable rating. The certificate is issued by the worldwide accredited inspection and certification organisation Vinçotte. Compared with the previous packaging, the new Chocomel pack yields a CO2 saving of 17 percent, according to independent Swedish environmental research institute IVL.
Choosing to use biomaterials for the packaging of this product is wholly in line with the company’s route2020 strategy, and its goal of ‘Nourishing by nature’. Nourishing by nature stands for better nutrition for consumers in the world and a good income for farmers, now and in the future. To achieve climate-neutral growth, FrieslandCampina is working on an efficient and sustainable production chain. In line with Sustainable Development Goal 12 of the United Nations, ‘Sustainable consumption and production’ (SDG 12), the company aims to use only agricultural raw materials and paper packaging in 2020, from fully sustainably managed sources.
