Cathay introduces renewable polyamides for textile and engineering applications

Shanghai (Chinaplas) - Cathay Industrial Biotech successfully started commercial production of renewable PA56, developed for textile (brandname Terryl®) and engineering applications...

Cathay Industrial Biotech Ltd (Cathay), a leader in industrial biotechnology, has provided long-chain diacids (LCDA) since 2003 to the polymer industry. The successful start-up of the 1,5 pentane diamime (DN5) in 2013 added a diamine to Cathay’s monomer platform. This new diamine is produced from 100% plant sugars using a patented process developed in Cathay’s Shanghai Research Center.

Using Cathay monomers Cathay is developing a family of polymers. The first to be launched is Terryl®, a polymer targeting the textile market. It improves skin feel, higher moisture absorbance, improved dye absorbance and 47% renewable carbon.  Terryl® is produced in a proprietary continuous-flow process from plant sugars.

"Terryl is a revolutionary polymer offering performance attributes previously unavailable to  the  fiber  markets  from  synthetic  materials.  Customer  response  has  been phenomenal." explains Dr. Xiucai Liu, CEO.

Terryl®, PA56 and DN5 will be made in Cathay’s Shandong (People’s Republic of
China)-based LCDA fermentation facilities which currently produce carbon 11 to carbon
15 diacids that are distributed worldwide through Cathay’s own distribution network. Terryl®, PA56 and DN5 will be distributed through the same network. Samples for all are currently available. Interested parties should contact their Cathay sales representative or the sales office at sales@cathaybiotech.com. (MT)
