Citrate plasticizers offer biobased plasticizer solution for polymers

At the NPE 2015, Jungbunzlauer, a European manufacturer of sustainable bio-ingredients for a host of different markets, presented its portfolio of Citrofol products. The company is the worldwide leading producer of citric acid, which it manufactures on the basis of fermentation technology.

Based on citric acid as the primary feedstock, Jungbunzlauer produces citrate esters that are marketed under the Citrofol brand name. Citrofol esters are safe and effective plasticizers that are finding increasing application as biobased alternatives to traditional crude oil based products.

Citrofol products, said the company, who is exhibiting at booth 26063 (South Hall), are compatible with a broad range of polymer types that include PVC, PU, acrylics but also biopolymers such as cellulosics, PLA and PHA. In most cases, these esters are able to replace traditional plasticizers, offering a safe, drop-in solution at a competitive price level.
The products are further characterized low volatility and low migration, making them suitable for industrial applications as well. Due to their low toxicity and compliance with stringent regulatory requirements, the Citrofol family of products is preferably used not only in sensitive applications such as medical devices, food packaging and pharmaceutical coatings, but also in sealants and adhesives.

CITROFOL® BII is a fully degradable citrate ester and is suitable for standard plastic Jungbunzlauer 1products as well as for biobased plastics. This versatile, first-rate plasticizer is certified by the DIN CERTCO institute according to the US standard ASTM D 6400 as well as the European compostable additives standard DIN EN 13432. This certification requires biodegradation of at least 90% of the materials within 180 days. Tests and comprehensive analysis have proven that CITROFOL® BII is environmentally friendly, and that it leaves absolutely no residues or degradation products in the soil, which can then still be used as farmland. For this reason, CITROFOL® BII is particularly recommended for use in biopolymers such as PLA (polylactic acid) for agricultural applications (e.g. mulch films, or films used to prevent soil erosion).

Furthermore, Jungbunzlauer’s citrate esters hold the USDA certificate for biobased products that verifies the amount of renewable biobased ingredients. (KL)
