Mango Materials named innovator by LAUNCH

Start-up company Mango Materials was recently named one of the top innovators in Green Chemistry through the LAUNCH program. LAUNCH is an open innovation platform that was founded in 2010 to identify and foster breakthrough solutions to create a more sustainable world.

The company was selected for its work on transforming waste methane into biodegradable plastics that are economically and functionally competitive with oil-based plastics. The methane is captured and fed to naturally occurring bacteria that produce the biodegradable plastic. According to the company, once that product is no longer needed, the PHA will break down in a microbial rich environment, producing methane which can be turned back into PHA with Mango Materials’ cradle-to-cradle process.

LAUNCH is currently focused on positively transforming the system of materials and manufacturing, which can have dramatic social, environmental and economic impacts on the world. In order to harness the innovation needed to advance this system, LAUNCH has issued a series of global challenges to address key barriers. The LAUNCH System Challenge: Green Chemistry called for technologies, platforms, services or business models that can deliver high performing materials and treatments while adhering to or enabling green chemistry principles.
This year, a total of ten innovators from the U.S., Canada and Brazil were chosen as LAUNCH finalists, all of whom took part in the Forum.

Mango Materials’ CEO Molly Morse and Vice President of Methane Marketing Anne mango materialsSchauer-Gimenez, traveled to Cape Canaveral, FL on January 23 and 24, 2015. where the LAUNCH Green Chemistry Forum was being hosted by LAUNCH founders NASA, NIKE, Inc., the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Department of State.
They spent four days working with a distinguished panel on their business model and scale-up strategy talking with over 40 council members in the field of green chemistry. They were also given the opportunity to tour the Kennedy Space Center and to meet astronaut Cady Coleman (see photo).

The selected innovators become part of the LAUNCH network, which comes with numerous advantages. As a network member, Mango Materials can look forward to support and assistance in various areas, including media and public relations training and exposure and continued engagement with and access to the LAUNCH Network beyond the challenge cycle.
